A Visit To The People’s Parliament

Politics might be a little boring to some but the fact we live in a democracy is something that we should never take for granted. Being able to vote for those who represent us is a privilege and one that should not be taken lightly or wasted.
As boring as it might be to some, the media has been flooded with politics due to the recent General Election in the UK, the presidential race in the United States as well as the Life Programme gang dipping their toes into the political world with their party political broadcasts a few weeks ago.

During the General Election a few weeks ago, the Life Programme gang split into 2 teams to create their party political broadcasts, with one team taking a slightly more tongue-in-cheek stance than the other but the project still shed light on the monumental task of running a country*. This piqued more of an interest in our country’s leadership, and how the devolved Governments operate within the UK, than they had before so who knows, we might have a future First Minister in our ranks.

The Scottish Parliament, Holyrood: Debating Chamber

We decided to delve further into the world of politics and visit The Scottish Parliament at Holyrood to discover more about the inner workings of the home of Scottish Democracy and one of the youngest Parliaments in the world; what goes on behind the scenes and why things are the way they are.

The Scottish Parliament Expert Guide, Aaron (thank you, Aaron!)

The group arrived at The Scottish Parliament for a tour, guided by Aaron. Aaron was a font of knowledge making the tour engaging and informative, as well as a lot of fun. He talked about Scotland’s Parliamentary history as well as the dramatic architecture of the building, in particular the Chamber itself which turned out to be one of the highlights of the tour. The Chamber is the place where the First Minister is questioned, debates are held and decisions are made. The Chamber also boasts a pretty impressive technical audio-visual set-up!

The team had a wonderful experience visiting the Parliament for the People and we can thoroughly encourage a visit. A guided tour from one of the expert guides is strongly recommended to get the most out of your visit.
