Creating Opportunities, Building Stronger Workforces

National Supported Internship Day 2025, celebrated annually on March 27th and founded by DFN Project SEARCH, is a crucial initiative to raise awareness of supported internships and the incredible benefits they bring. This year's theme is, “Empowerment,” focusing on placing young adults with learning disabilities and/or who are autistic at the forefront and sharing their stories across the UK.

According to recent UK government statistics, there is a significant employment gap for disabled people. This highlights a substantial untapped pool of talent that businesses across the UK are potentially missing out on. Supported internships play a crucial role in bridging this gap by providing opportunities and skills development for individuals with learning disabilities.

Edge Group Scotland: Preparing Young Adults for the Future

At Edge Group Scotland committed to preparing young adults for the world of work. With a strong focus on developing employability skills and fostering independence, our programmes act as a springboard for young adults, with one positive destination being supported internships such as those offered by Edinburgh Project SEARCH. We are dedicated to ensuring the young adults who participate in our programmes are future-ready and equipped with the necessary employability skills to aid them on their journey to independence.

Supported internships provide a structured, work-based programme of study that equips young adults with both qualifications and practical skills, facilitating a successful transition into the workplace.

The Importance of Employer Engagement

Engaging with supported internships isn't just a socially responsible initiative; it's a strategic business move. By providing opportunities, employers gain access to a diverse and dedicated workforce. Many young adults with learning disabilities bring unique strengths, loyalty, and a strong work ethic to their roles. Businesses can also benefit from a more inclusive and diverse work environment.

A Call to Action

National Supported Internship Day 2025 is more than just a day; it's a call to action. It's an opportunity for businesses to reflect on their hiring practices and embrace inclusivity. By working together, we can empower young adults with learning disabilities, create more diverse workplaces, and build a stronger, more inclusive society.
