Why Do We… Ski?
The Benefits of Skiing for Young Adults with Additional Support Needs
Why do we do the activities we do? Our focus on the outdoors and staying active are 2 major elements of our holistic approach to supporting the young adults with additional support needs who attend our day programmes.
Taking part in outdoor sports and activities in supported, safe, environments lets our young people achieve great things. Over the coming weeks, we will be taking a closer look at the activities we run as part of our day service programmes and first up is skiing.
Skiing offers a unique blend of physical, social, and emotional benefits that can be particularly advantageous for young adults with additional support needs.
Physical Benefits:
Improved Fitness: Skiing is a full-body workout that engages multiple muscle groups, enhancing strength, flexibility, and balance. The cardiovascular demands of the sport help improve heart health and stamina.
Enhanced Coordination: The dynamic nature of skiing requires precise coordination between the body and mind. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals with motor skill challenges, as it helps to refine their movements and improve their overall coordination.
Increased Confidence: Mastering new skiing skills, from the bunny slope to the black diamond, can significantly boost self-esteem. Overcoming challenges on the slopes can translate into increased confidence in other areas of life.
Social Benefits:
Community Building: Skiing provides opportunities for social interaction and community building. Sharing the experience with peers can foster friendships, improve communication skills, and create lasting bonds.
Inclusive Environment: Our supported ski sessions create an inclusive environment where individuals of all abilities can participate. This can help young adults feel accepted and valued, reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness.
Emotional Benefits:
Stress Reduction: The combination of physical activity, fresh air, and the stunning scenery of the Lothians can help reduce stress and anxiety. The focus required for skiing can also provide a mental break from day-to-day worries.
Positive Mindset: Achieving goals on the slopes, no matter how small, can boost self-esteem and promote a positive mindset. Overcoming challenges can instil a sense of resilience and determination.
In conclusion, skiing offers a holistic approach to well-being for young adults with additional support needs. By combining physical activity, social interaction, and emotional benefits, skiing can empower individuals to reach their full potential. Being outdoors, working as a team and connecting with nature ensures the focus is on individuals’ well-being including self-esteem, resilience, confidence, social trust, positive functioning and friendships.
